Gortys
GORTYS. Gortys is after Festos the most well known ancient ruin of South Crete. Gortys is located near the village of Agioi Deka (10 saints) and in earlier times it was an important city. Often,Gortys is called the capital of Roman Crete. In Roman times, Gortys was built just above an old churchyard. The first thing you will see entering Gortys, is the basilica of St. Titus. Titus was left behind here by the Apostle Paulus, to spread the Word of Christ. Later, Titus became the first bishop of Crete. Gortys is famous because of her Oodeion and her laws. The Odeon was an indoor music temple. The laws of Gortys where written in the 5th century before Christ in Cretan dialect.
