SPINALONGA. The peninsula
of Spinalonga can be reached from
Agios
Nikolaos,
Elounta and Plaka. In the 16th century, when the Turkish threatening
was becoming larger, the Venetians built here the powerful fortress.
In 1715 the Turks took over the fortress, but they had to leave
in 1903. From this time on, Spinalonga was set up as a leper colony.
Only in 1957 this leper colony at Spinalonga was closed and the
buildings declined quickly, that's why the place looks melancholic.
