Milatos - Lassithi Prefecture (Greece)

MILATOS. Milatos is a well-maintained traditional village located between Malia and Agios Nikolaos. It is about the same place where originally the ancient Greek town of Milatos was. The village is divided into two parts; one part is in the hinterland, the other part is at the coast.This village is also called "Paralia Milatou. Paralia means beach in Greek. The distance between the two villages is about two kilometres. The village of Milatos is quiet, the old houses have been restored in the old style and they look very nice. It is worthwhile taking a stroll in the lanes of the village. The village on the coast is touristy. Here are all sorts of tavernas, cafes and shops. From Milatos it’s possible to make nice trips, as there are several popular seaside resorts nearby. A few kilometres away is the beautiful Vrachasi pass, it is an ideal place to walk. Although Milatos is a small village, it still has a very rich history. According to the ancient Greek history the city of Miletus in Turkey was founded by residents of Milatos. In 1823 a drama took place in a cave near Milatos; Turks killed 3600 Greeks. The cave can be visited. Every year, on Easter Sunday, a church mass is held in memory of these victims in the little church next to the cave.
