in Thrace
At
Didymoticho one can still see the walls around the acropolis
with imperial monograms on the towers, the small Byzantine church
of St. Catherine from the 14th century and that of St. Dimitrios
with the monogram of Andronicus Raoul Asani Paleologos. The town
also bas the oldest mosque in Europe built in the 14th century.
The Armenian Church of St. George is located on the site of an
older church where the Emperor Ioannis Katakouzinos had been
crowned. It is said that the Swedish King Charles XII was imprisoned
in a small cave within the Metropolis when confined at Didymoticho.
There is a rich Folk Museum while popular events from the pre-Christian
age can be traced in the Kiopek - Bey custom performed during
the carnival period and evincing three thousand years of Greek
presence in the area. On Agia Petra hil, opposite Didimoticho,
ruins of Plotinoupolis were revealed, which was founded by Emperor
Traianos. The castle of Pythio is also a very important monument,
really imposing in river Evros valley.
