HERAKLION - IRAKLIO
Iraklion (Heraklion) is the capital of Crete and is located central
at the north coast of the island. It is one of the biggest city's
of Greece and the airport has the largest charter capacity of the
country. Its a lively town. Because of the central location, good
connections with the mainland and Europe and the existence of many
hotels, Heraklion is often the starting point of holidays at Crete.
Heraklion offers a great variety; busy shopping area's, many terraces
at squares, a colourful daily market, and of course many eating-houses
with Cretan specialties. Although at first sight the city can
be overwhelming loud and dusty, it is a city with its own character.
Walk along the harbour, the old Venetian fortress walls, the nice
market, the Morosini- fountain, the beautiful churches such as Agios
Minas and Agios Titos, the big square of freedom and the impressive
archaeological museum and you will agree: Iraklion is a beautiful
lively city. From Heraklion are leaving every day busses
to almost all destinations on Crete. Of course you may not miss
Knossos!
