Feres
Accommodations
in Thrace
25 km northeast of Alexandroupoli is the town of Ferres, built
on the site of the Byzantine town of Vira. In the centre the Byzantine
church of the Virgin Kosmosotira founded in 1151 by Prince Issac
Komninos, son of emperor Alexios I Komninos still survives. The
church is a marvel of architecture and is covered in wall paintings
which according to archaeologists depict the founding of the monastery
and persons from the founder's family. Today the church is a centre
of pilgrimage for Thracian trom all over the world. The area of
Dadia is known for its large forest of pine and oak which is home
to rare birds of prey from Europe such as sea eagles, harrier eagles,
sparrow hawks and others. There is a special area where food is
left for the birds with look outs to they can be monitored.
