On the shores of the Lake Pamvotida and 445 kilometers (276.5 miles) from Athens, is the town of Ioannina with its 90,000 inhabitants. Ioannina has the charm of an old city but is also a modern and vibrant city. One of the Greek universities is located here in Ioannina.
Ioannina is wonderful - the scenery is beautiful here. Around the lake there are many terraces with taverns, cafes and bars, and for those who love walking, a walk around the lake is a brilliant experience. The history of Ioannina is closely related to the Turks. In some neighborhoods of Ioannina you can imagine yourselve in Turkey, especially when visiting the local markets.
In the middle of Ioannina Lake, is the island of Ali Pascha, with its monasteries. The story of "Kyra Frosini" is legendary. It dates from the year 1801. Kyra Frosini was a woman who was murdered because she didn’t want to sleep with Ali Pasha, the Turkish governor at that time.
Ioannina is a traditional town. A lot of buildings from centuries ago are well preserved and worth a visit. Near Ioannina is the museum Vrelli located where the history of Greece revived in the form of wax figures. The caves of Perama, are the largest and oldest caves with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. You must them if you are in Ioannina.
