Amaliada - Ilia (Greece)
Amaliada. Amaliada is the name of a town, built in the middle of an emerald green field with olive trees and vines, in the north-west of the Peloponnese in Greece. Amaliada was named after Queen Amalia of Greece in 1830 and was formed by merging two communes, Kalitsa and Dervitselepi.
The Monastery of Frankavilla, built during the Frankish occupation, is two kilometres away. Another monastery is Agios Nikolaos of Fronkopidima. The name comes from "dangerous leap" (pidima) made by a knight to escape his pursuers.
North of Amaliada you can take the road to the right, to visit the ruins of ancient Elis. Elis was the place where the athletes trained before they entered the Olympics.
