Farm tracks from Traianopolis and
Dorisko lead to the Evros Delta. The delta was formed by the depositing of
gilt by the river Evros in the sea over
centuries. The delta was formed by two branches of the river and the sea. Within
the delta there are many tributaries of the river, canals, lakes, islets and
gulfs along the coastline of the sea which penetrates quite far inland. In
this way an ideal ecosystem was created for the survival of fish, insects, animals
and birds. The Delta wetlands are protected under the Ramsar Convention and
are
among the richest in Europe. More than 300 species of birds live or pass through
here. Located within the delta area are watch out posts and biological stations
maintained by the Greek Association for the Protection of Nature.
The area of Dadia is known for its large forest of pine and oak which is home
to rare birds of prey from Europe such as sea eagles, harrier eagles, sparrow
hawks and others. There is a special area where food is left for the birds with
look outs to they can be monitored.
