Orestiada. Orestiada or Orestias is a city in the northeastern part of the prefecture of Evros in Thrace, Greece. Orestiada is 900 kilometers (560 miles) from Athens, 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Thessaloniki and 325 kilometers (202 miles) from Istanbul (Constantinople). Orestiada is located 114 kilometers (71 miles) from the capital of the department of Alexandroupolis. It has about 20,000 inhabitants and is the second largest city of the department. The largest city, Alexandroupolis, has about 60,000 inhabitants.
Orestiada is a modern Greek city. This city is located in an important agricultural area with good rail and road links. The University of Thrace is located in Orestiada.
Orestiada, founded in 1923, is the newest and northernmost city of Greece. In the year 1923, Greek refugees from the region of Edirne (Andrianoupolis) came here to live. Most came from the suburb of Karagats. Karagats was then ceded to Turkey by the Treaty of Lausanne (July 23, 1923).
