Patitiri - Alonissos (Greece)

Patitiri. Patitiri is since 1978 the capital of Alonissos and is also the port town where you will arrive by ferry. The village lies in the southeast of the island and has about two thousand permanent residents. At the harbour there are many restaurants, ouzeri's, fish tavernas and cafeterias. In the summer the atmosphere here is very cosy. Patitiri is located in a pretty colourful bay, it is built on the slopes of low hills. Unfortunately, the inhabitants have their homes built without any regard to charm and aesthetics. That's what you miss when you walk in Patitiri. It looks more like a town than a village on a quiet island.

Patitiri actually means grape press, the name was given because of the fact that there were once many vineyards on the island. Alonissos was once famous for the production of wine. A plant disease, however, brought ​​an abrupt end to this craft.

In Patitiri are many hotels and apartments. There are also rooms for rent. At the harbour, top left on the slope, there is a very interesting ethnographic museum that is owned by Kostas and Angela Mavriki. The administrators of the museum, however, are Dutch, who live at Alonissos. In the museum, which consists of four floors, various valuable objects are exhibited from local and Greek history. The museum is a must see!

In Patitiri the office of the organisation MOM is also located, this organisation protects the seal Monachus-Monachus who lives in the Mediterranean sea and is threatened with extinction. Many of these seals live mostly in sea caves north of Alonissos but also everywhere in the Aegean and Mediterranean seas. In this office in Patitiri, movies are shown on big screens and all kind of information is provided to visitors.
