Diafani (Dhiafàni). Diafani is the second largest port of the Greek island of Karpathos and it is located in the northeast of the island, 70 kilometers (43 mi) from the capital of Pigadia. Diafani is a traditional fishing village that is accessible by road through the villages of Aperi and Spoa. You can also travel to Diafani, daily, by boat from Pigadi. During summer these boats are filled with tourists who want to visit the mountain village of Olympos. Diafani is the seaside resort and supply port of the mountain village of Olympos.
In Diafani there are several pebble beaches and swimming in the clear water is a real pleasure. The most famous beaches are Diafani Beach and Vananda beach, which is accessible by foot. In the middle of the bay of Diafani is a construction pier where ships and colorful fishing boats moor. In Diafani are no big hotels, but there are some family hotels and rooms for rent.
Diafani is ideal for people who love peace and nature rather than masses of tourists. Here you can avoid crowds. This area was inhabited since ancient times. Archaeological excavations brought to light a Mycenaean tomb. In addition, important objects were found and reserved in the British Museum. In Diafani you’ll find some seafood taverns, where delicious fresh fish is readily available at very low prices.
Around Diafani lie low hills with pine trees, with a rugged backdrop of the high mountains of Olympos. On top of the hills are some abandoned mills. There are three churches in the village, each with a red tile dome. The largest church is Zoodochos Pigi (Life Bestowing Source). From Diafani you can take a boat to the small island of Saria, or to beautiful beaches on Karpathos.
