KECHRIA. If you drive from Skiathos Town and head north from Skiathos to Kastro, you encounter several churches and monasteries. We stopped at two churches and that was very interesting. We stopped at the monastery of Kechria and at the church of Anastasa. First the monastery Kechria. The road here is not very good, it is a dirt road and you need at least a 4X4 jeep.
Yet, the church of Panagia Kechria is very frequently visited by walkers. There are footpaths and signs, the route is displayed correctly. We have walked a part of the route and the nature was very impressive. Mountains covered with lush forests, water, ancient olive presses, beautiful, colourful flowers, the scents of chamomile and oregano; Wonderful!
At the monastery of Kechria is the remarkable church bell, which is made from the remains of a large bomb from the Second World War. This monastery was built on a mountain, it is located near the eponymous bay. The monastery was built in the 18th century. In the church beautiful murals can be seen. Very beautiful is also the iconostasis which is very well preserved. The dome of the church is striking with the pink and light blue colours. Besides the church is a well, with good fresh, flowing potable water.
