Agiassos - Lesbos (Greece)

Agiassos (Agiasos). Agiassos is located on the slopes of Mount Olympos, at 475 meters altitude, in the south of the island of Lesvos/Lesbos, 32 kilometres west of Mytilene. It is best known for the St. Mary's Church and the residents have shown over the centuries that they want to maintain the Greek Orthodox and traditional values ​​of the place. Agiassos consists of many cobbled streets, traditional ceramic roofing, stone houses with small balconies and coloured doors and windows.

Agiassos is surrounded by a dense forest of pine trees, plane trees and chestnut trees, located in an area where you can walk. On August 15 here is the great feast of Mary. Believers from across the globe flock to pay homage to the miraculous icon of "Panagia tis Vrefokratousa" (Madonna with child). Another festival which is celebrated is the 'Chestnut Festival'. Visitors who visit the town, can taste chestnuts in the centre of the region, these are special days when the village receives hundreds of guests and the restaurants and cafeterias in the village are full of people.

Regarding the history of Agiassos: in the 19th century Agiassos was one of the most important economic centres in Lesbos because all kinds of crafts developed here and brought wealth to the little town. You can see the wealth from the past in many beautiful mansions that are built here. In the town is a great library, a theatre, a folklore museum and an active organisation that seeks to maintain the traditions that were passed through the ages.
