Englouvi (Eglouvi). The traditional mountain village "Englouvi" is centrally located on the island, south of the village Karia. This village is really hidden among the mountains, it is located about 800 meters above sea level. It has a beautiful square with many terraces and cafes. Englouvi is best known for the lentils that are grown here. It is claimed that these are the best lentils in Greece. These grow on a plateau, two kilometres away from the village at an altitude of 950 meters, near the church of Agios Donatos. During my visit, a landowner and grower of lentils (Thomas Kontogiorgis) told me that these kind of lentils only grow here and only in a certain area of the plateau, not everywhere. This has to do with the earth and the ground which can hold water here, even for a long time when it does not rain.
Once a year, on August 6, a big festival is held next to the church of Agios Donatos, when the lentil festival is celebrated. Next to the church of Agios Donatos are some wells, here one can safely drink water. On this plateau you will notice all kinds of stone huts, which are vaulted stone houses, they are called "Volti". In the past, workers from all over the island used to stay in these houses.
