Rhodes town - Rhodes (Greece)

Rhodes town. Rhodes is the capital and largest attraction of the Greek island of Rhodes. The city with its fortress and castle is situated on the north coast of the island. It is very nice to stroll through the narrow streets of the splendid and historic old town with its many medieval influences. Since 1988, the old town of Rhodes has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Rhodes town there are several Byzantine churches and Turkish mosques. Rhodes town has an archaeological museum, near the harbor. You can visit the Palace of the Grand Master and a museum of folk art.

Rhodes town actually consists of three parts:

a) The ancient city  The Acropolis of Rhodes, the theatre and the stage are located here. They were restored by the Italians and are still impressive to see, especially at night when everything is lit. This section has 24-hour access and no entrance fee. From the temple you can see the spectacular sunset behind the Turkish mountains.

b) The old medieval town  This is undoubtedly the most impressive part of Rhodes. The four kilometer (about 2.5 mi) long city walls with their many gates make the Old Town look like a large castle from the outside. You can walk the city walls on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 2:45pm and the starting point is the entrance to the Grand Master's Palace. Walking through the old town you will find yourself back in the Middle Ages. Rhodes was divided into two parts, namely the southern part and Chora, where Greeks, Franks and Jews lived during the age of chivalry. The temple of Aphrodite is located in the old Town of Rhodes. The narrow streets and tall buildings in this part of town are striking.

c) The new city  The new city begins at the harbor and stretches to Rodini and the ancient Acropolis. At the entrance of the old port are three old mills. In the new city you can go shopping or sit on a terrace. The old buildings of the Italian domination in the Mandraki harbor are outstanding. Here you will also find statues guarding the entrance to Rhodes: "The deer and the doe."
