Zoniana - Rethymno Prefecture (Greece)
Zoniana. One of the most interesting caves in Crete, lies the village of Zoniana, which is located at a distance of 43 kilometres from Heraklion and 52 kilometres from Rethymnon. It is the cave of Sfentoni. Zoniana is situated at an altitude of 630 meters on Mount Psiloritis (Idi) in the province of Rethymnon. When you drive up the mountain to the village of Zoniana, which is located near the more famous village of Anogia, you see the sign that points the way to the cave Sfentoni. In this cave you can admire many stalactites and stalagmites. When you follow the signs you come to the parking lot with a wonderful view over the area. You cannot enter the cave on your own; buying a ticket also includes a guide and he is responsible for both your safety and for the protection of the cave. The guides are all from the village of Zoniana. They grew up near the cave and have played as children in its environment, when the cave was still not open to visitors. They are all well trained to explain all the dark secrets of the fascinating cave to you. The village has a wax museum with over eighty images of people from Greek and Cretan history.
