Thassos: Symphony in green and blue. Scenic
picture of pine-trees leaning forward over the sea. The emerald
green island of the North Aegean Sea. A cosmopolitan island
holding a wealth of history. Thassos is 6,5 nm away from the town
of Keramoti and Limenas, the capital of the island, is 17 nm
away
of the city of Kavala. Ferries and hydrofoils (blue
dolphins) run regularly from and to Kavala, Keramoty and Nea
Peramos. Not far from the international airport of Kavala, large
stretches of sand charming seaside resorts, quaint mountainous
villages where colours, senses and pleasure in perfect harmony,
open out before your eyes. Holidays on Thassos are an
unforgettable experience. The broad smile of Macedonian
hospitality is coupled with the sunlight playing on the pure blue
water along the shores. A wide variety of hotels and rooms to let;
picturesque tavernas on the seafront serving sea titbits. Under
the wide plane-trees of the mountainous villages, local delicacies
and home made walnut sweet. Archaeological sites and
prehistoric monuments are evidence of the island's great
prosperity throughout the centuries. Monasteries perched on
cliffs, deserted Venetian towers and settlements where history
has left its indelible marks. And in the evening, there is
entertainment to satisfy all tastes: romantic dinners, frenzied
dancing at night clubs, refreshing cocktails at bars, traditional
Greek dishes in tavernas.

Limenas, the cosmopolitan capital can be the
starting point for trips. You can find all the government
departments
here. The market is bustling with activity. There are many
hotels and rooms to let available. And the beaches
at
Evreokastro, Synikismoa, Agios Vassilios, Glykadi,
should not be missed. Not far from Limenas, the beach
of Makryammos offers excellent tourist facilities.
The ancient agora, the sanctuaries, the Theatre and the
Citadel are worth to visit. A large number of interesting
findings are exhibited in the archaeological museum. You
will be most impressed by the statues of Aphrodite and
Kouros. The village of Panagia is famous for the
enormous plane trees dominating the square, the fresh
running water and the home-made syrup sweets that are really
hard to resist. Chrissi Ammoudia stretches along the
coast below Panagia and it is popular with bathers
enjoying it's expanse, beautiful waves rolling onto the
shore and the quaint fish-tavernas. Potamia:
traditional resor whose hillside position affords panoramic
views. Kinira is a magical place steeped in history.
Opposite the headland lies the island of Babouras. Popular
beaches are Alyki and Astris. Psili Ammos
is a peaceful beach, with very fine sand. The monastery of
Archaggelos, built on the steep face of a cliff casts
a glance over Mount
Athos. |

In addition to charming beaches, the inland is equally
stunning. Mount Ypsario (1203 m high) occupies the central
part of the island. It is worth exploring the mountainous
villages of Thassos. Pine woods and running water create
ecosystems of exquisite beauty. The principal villages worth
visiting are: Theologos. A pretty traditional village
built on the side of Mt. Ypsario. It used to be the capital
of Thassos. Kastro (area of Limenaria) Remains of a
prehistoric settlement and some galleries of the ancient
mines have survived up to this day. Maries. It dates
back to Byzantine times. Sotiros. A sanctuary
dedicated to Hercules the Thassian.
