Apiranthos - Naxos (Greece)

Apiranthos. The mountain village of Apiranthos, also called Aperanthos, on the Greek island of Naxos, is located 26 kilometers (16 mi) east of Naxos town. The route from Naxos town to Apiranthos is beautiful. The village is built on the slopes of Mount Fanari, at 800 meters (2,600 ft) altitude. Apiranthos is completely car-free. You can park your car on the outskirts of the village and then walk through its narrow streets and staircases. The picturesque houses are built close together and the narrow streets often run under the houses. The traditional architecture of the houses, bridges and arches is magnificent.

The lively center of the village is located a little higher. There is a characteristically quaint village square. In the square and the streets around it are nice shops and traditional pubs. Apiranthos is also called "the marble village" because almost all the streets are paved with marble stones. A thousand inhabitants live in the village, mostly farmers.
