ITANOS. Itanos which is also called Ermoupolis, is located in the northwest of Sitia (24 km) and north of Vai (3 km). Here, next to the beaches, you can see the archaeological ruins of ancient Itanos. A part of the ancient city lies on the seabed. Itanos was in ancient times a prosperous area because of the fact that there was trade in purple paint and glass. Also during the Roman and Venetian times this was a lively area.A visit to Itanos is not only worth it because of the ancient sites but also because of the beautiful beaches with turquoise waters. Snorkelers will like this place. On the beaches there are no facilities and there are no beach kiosks or shops. There are no hotels or apartments. Visiting Itanos can be easily combined with a visit to the palm beach of Vai and the monastery of Toplou which is located 9 kilometres away.
