Pachia Ammos. Pachia Ammos is a village located 22 kilometers southeast of Agios Nikolaos. Pachia Ammos, which literally means "thick sand", is situated on a large bay where there is a large sand and pebble beach and is on the route Agios Nikolaos - Ierapetra. The village which was founded about 100 years ago, has developed tourism since the 80's. In the year 1999, scenes were shot here for the kids movie ‘Tsatsiki’ which at the time was a great success. Pachia Ammos today attracts quite a lot of tourists even though it is never very busy. On the left side of the bay there is a pier where fishing boats lay. There are a number of tavernas and cafes and there are hotels and apartments.
Just outside Pachia Ammos is Gournia, an ancient town from the Minoan period in which the ruins of a palace are located.
