Walk through the village on a beautiful evening. Almost everybody is outside and if you, as a guest, greet them, they will always courteously greet you back. Compared with the northern part of Crete, the south side is sunnier and warmer. Mirtos has an extraordinary subtropical climate because it is protected by the Dikti Mountains. This climate is almost unique to the island. Spring and autumn are sunny and the winter is mild. Summer is of course very warm, but because of the location by the sea, there is always a refreshing sea breeze. In spring and autumn you will see guests come from the north or from the east of Ierapetra, because they heard it’s out of the wind, it’s sunny and it’s warmer there.
