Volos is the capital of the department of Magnesia, the largest port city in Thessaly and also an important commercial and industrial center. Volos is a relatively new city because a severe earthquake destroyed it in 1955. The city was completely rebuilt. However, the traditional Greek customs were preserved. It is really worth your while to visit a typical Greek "Kafeneion" here and order the delicious snacks with a carafe of tsipouro.
Volos is built atop the ancient city of Iolkos. According to Greek mythology, the king of Iolkos Pelias gave his cousin Jason orders to find the Golden Fleece (Chrissomalon Derras) far before the beginning of the Trojan War. The king hoped Jason would never return. Jason and his men departed from Iolkos and experienced what was later called the journey of the Argonauts. With the help of the sorceress Medea Jason succeeded and brought back the Golden Fleece.
