LEFKIMMI. Lefkimi is the largest town of the southern part of Corfu, it is located 41 kilometres south of Corfu town. Lefkimi is one of the most traditional villages of Corfu , its characteristics are the narrow streets, tall houses, churches and cafés that remind us of the old days. Lefkimi is divided by a small river into two parts, this beautiful area is called Potami which literally means river. On one side of the rivers there are cafes and shops; The town is bustling and fun, there are striking contrasts between the traditional and the modern life. Sometimes it seems as if time has stood still here, many older people still wear traditional costumes. If you want, you can stay in Lefkimi, there are a number of hotels and apartments. Lefkimi is also known because of saltpans since the 13th century. The saltpans of Lefkimi are so rich that they can provide salt throughout the entire northwest of Greece. Archaeologists claim that there are many ruins beneath the ground dating from the Neolithic and Palaeolithic ages. Thucydides wrote that in 435-434 BC, the battle between the Corfians and Corinthians took place here, the Corfians won triumphantly. Near Lefkimi are some very nice beaches, Molos, Alykes, Ai-Gordis, Kanoula, Limnes and Mikro Nisi.
