Paliouri - Halkidiki (Greece)
Paliouri. Paliouri is the most southern village of the Kassandra peninsula in the prefecture Halkidiki. It is located 75 kilometers (47 mi) from Polygyros and 112 kilometers (70 mi) from Thessaloniki. About 1000 inhabitants live in the village live and are mainly engaged in tourism.
The area around Paliouri is best known for its many apiaries out there and the good honey made here. In the area are also many olive trees, and the area is also famous for its high quality olive oil. It is said that, in antiquity, the city of Theramvos was located where Paliouri now lies. This is the story of the great Greek historian, Herodotus. This town was destroyed by Xerxes and his army from Persia, and then ceased to exist. The ancient city Theramvos was located near the town of Agios Nikolaos, according to the archaeological finds made there.
An idyllic pine forest surrounds Paliouri. The area is perfect for people who enjoy hiking. Near the village are many beautiful beaches, the most famous being Alonaki, Chrousso, Xina, Avlaki, Roditis and Xina. You can reach Via Xina via a dirt road to the lighthouse Kanistros. Along the way you will see a number of beaches and the church of Agios Nikolaos. Those who like camping can go to the campsite of Chrousso.
