PALEOCHORA. Paleochora is a large village on the south coast of Crete. According to historical sources, it would be the place where the Doric city Kalamidi was located. However it is only 72 kilometers from Chania city, there is a whopping one and a half hours to reach here by car. Although the road is quite tiring and very twisty, it certainly pays to visit this lovely resort. The village is located partially on a peninsula and on both sides of the peninsulas there are beaches. The most beautiful beach is on the western side, which is the large sandy beach that is well organised with many sunbeds and parasols. Besides the beach there are all kinds of nice terraces and also a number of hotels and apartments. On the other side of the peninsula lies the harbour and the pebble beach. Also this beach is good and has clear waters. From the port of Paleochora boats sail daily to the island of Gavdos and to Sougia, Agia Roumeli (the Samaria Gorge), Loutro and Sfakia (Hora Sfakion). In Paleochora now live about 2300 inhabitants. The cosiest place in Paleochora is definitely the center and especially in the evening. there are many shops, cafes and restaurants that are crowded and the atmosphere here is amazing. Paleochora is also surrounded by beautiful hiking areas and there are many attractions including beautiful picturesque villages, Byzantine churches, lovely beaches, all kinds of caves and scenic hiking trails. In Paleochora there is also an interesting historical museum. Every year there are traditional festivals from 1st to 10th August
