Tzitzifes - Chania Prefecture (Greece)

TSITSIFES (Tzitzifes). Tsitsífes is a typical quiet village, located in one of the most beautiful areas of Crete. Tsisifes or rather Tzitzifes, as the Greeks call it, is a village built on two adjacent hills, which gradually slopes down to the plain and where there is a ravine between the two hills. This ravine is a water source and there are many plane trees some claiming to be over 500 years old. Cretan fighters gathered here in the 19th century to make plans against the Turkish occupiers. The houses in Topolia are very nice, they are in the traditional Cretan style made out of beautiful stones. From the top of these two hills are beautiful views over the entire province of Apokoronas. In the village there is a kafeneion and a mini market in the old town square. Tzitzifes located in a beautiful green area of ​​Apokoronas province, has been named after the tree "Tzitzifia" (= jujube tree), a tree that is widespread here

The village is home to approximately 200 residents who are mainly engaged in agriculture and animal management.. The main products produced here are olives and wine. Also a number of companies make cheese. In and around the village there are all kinds of churches built in the Middle Ages. In the village there are also a number of tavernas where you can taste Cretan specialties. Tzitzifes is 32 km from Chania. The village Vrises is located about 5.5 km away and the beautiful sandy beaches of Georgioupolis are about 20 minutes away. Tzitzifes is at least 1000 years old, in ancient documents the village is mentioned by Nikiforos Fokas (960 years), the liberator of Crete.
