Souda - Chania Prefecture (Greece)
Souda. Souda is the largest natural harbour in Greece and the deepest bay in the Mediterranean. It is located east of Chania city in Crete, between the Akrotiri peninsula and the Cretan mainland. The name is derived from Latin and literally means "narrow passage". At the entrance of this natural harbour are a number of small islands, the largest of them is called Souda. At the southern entrance there is a Venetian fortress, and near to the village of Megala Chorafia lie the ruins of the ancient city of "Aptera". Aptera was a historical town in the 7th century BC. It was built by the Dorians as a strategic place to have a monitoring role in trading.
